A series of tasks linked to a goal, with a deadline.

  • eg. Complete app mockup; Develop project plan; Execute business development campaign; Write blog post; Finalize product specifications; Attend conference

Area of responsibility

A sphere of activity with a standard to be maintained over time

  • eg. Health; Finances, Professional Development; Travel; Hobbies; Friends; Apartment; Car; Productivity; Direct reports; Product Development; Writing

Resource

A topic or theme of ongoing interest

  • eg. habit formation; project management; transhumanism; coffee; music; gardening; online marketing; SEO; interior design; architecture; note-taking

Archive

Inactive items from the other 3 categories

  • eg. projects that have been completed or become inactive; areas that you are no longer committed to maintaining; resources that you are no longer interested in

Notes:

We spend our days completing tasks, which are grouped in projects which fall under our areas of responsiblity.

  • A project has a goal - a discrete event that will happen

  • An area of responsibility has a standard - it continues indefintely

  • Projects fall into area ...

  • Often people confuse areas for projects (research, vacation, etc)

  • For each area, make a project list

  • Define your projects or they will define you

  • PARA gives consistency and adaptability

  • No more than 4 levels deep
